One of the lesser-known benefits of double glazing (or even triple glazing) was seen first hand in August in Tamatea, New Zealand, when two panes of glass prevented a rapidly growing fire from spreading to a home, which contained three sleeping occupants.
The fire, said to have broken out at 00:15, destroyed a small greenhouse and part of a fence, and was only hindered when it met the resilient double glazing featured in the property’s family home.
The owner of the property commented: “[The firemen] were here pretty quickly, and got onto it, which was good because if it had have broken the windows, the curtains would have caught fire and who knows what could have happened.”
“A testament to the durability of double glazing”
This fortunate turn of events was ultimately a testament to the durability of double glazing, with the resident stating that the double glazed windows had managed to keep the fire at bay, and the family out of harm’s way. Although the exterior pane of glass cracked due to the intense heat, the second pane was enough to restrict the fire from spreading into the property.
