Choosing windows for a period home in SurreyThe freshness, simplicity and delicacy of Edwardian-period design is utterly different from the decadence, clutter and richness of the Victorian period that went before it. Edwardian-style homes are characterised by floral patterns, pastel colour palates and light furnishings, with the influence of Art Nouveau coming through. If you live in an Edwardian-style home and need to choose new windows and doors, it’s important to select options that are in keeping with the original character of the building. If you want to achieve a more contemporary feel, it is possible to add beautiful, modern twists to Edwardian classics.

If you are lucky enough to live in a genuine Edwardian period property, then you might need to ask permission from the local authorities before you start choosing new windows and doors. In conservation areas, it is often prohibited to change anything that alters the original identity of the property – and this can be as specific as having double-glazed windows fitted. If your home is simply Edwardian in style, then you have plenty of options to choose from.

Windows

Classic Edwardian sash windows are similar to Victorian designs, except that they are often presented as bays. The top sash features the typical multi-pane effect (generally with six uniform panes separated by glazing bars, though some modern designs have adapted this), and the bottom sash is usually made up of a single pane, so as to let in plenty of natural light. As with preceding periods, white was the colour of choice for Edwardian windows.

If you are following through with Edwardian style for your interior design, then your windows should be dressed simply but elegantly. You might want to use delicate lace, complemented by light, floral curtains, to add a touch of texture to the room. For a more contemporary finish, you could opt for a simple roller blind with a pattern that subtly picks up on the colours and shapes of the room’s furnishings.  We recently installed brand new sash windows in Kensington for new homeowners.

Doors

Edwardian front doors have many of the same traits as the windows – such as the focus on letting in natural light, the influence of Art Nouveau and the simplistic designs – but often incorporate bolder colours to make the door a feature of the home. While the windows were often painted white, doors might be red or green (this aspect can be easily adapted to suit your personal taste). Edwardian front doors are wider than Georgian or Victorian styles, and substitute some of the panels for decorative glass panes. Some designs also feature windows on either side to enhance the flow of natural light further.
