Remember George Formby? Well, it’s time to follow suit, and your house will be gleaming in no time at all!
A potted history of doors, windows and spring-cleaning
Windows and doors play a key role in the history of the great spring clean. In fact, the reason March was designated as the official month for this annual cleaning tradition was because it was warm enough to open all the windows and doors of the house, but not warm enough for insects to pose a problem. Also at this time, seasonal high winds would enter the house through the windows and doors, removing accumulated dust.
Give white vinegar a go
Using vinegar is an efficient, environmentally friendly, and a time-tested way to clean your windows. Combine nine parts hot water with 1 part white vinegar, adding half a teaspoon of washing up liquid to prevent streaking. Pour the solution into a spray bottle, and spray sparingly onto the windowpane and surrounding frame. Buff dry with a paper towel, then watch them sparkle!
Don’t forget the front door
Keeping the front door and surrounding area clean is vital in maintaining a tidy and hygienic home. So, to clean the front door, use warm soapy water, and gently wash down the paintwork. To follow, dry with chamois leather, or an old towel.
Invest in well-insulated doors and windows
In order to minimise dust entering the house through door and window frames, invest in products that are well-insulated and draft-proof. Call Hamilton Windows for more information.
Minimise condensation
To prevent more sinister household complaints, such as damp, flaking paint and rust, make sure that you’re rigorous in your attempts to control condensation on your windows. Get into the habit of wiping them with an old towel, not just during the spring-cleaning period, but throughout the year! Consider investing in double-glazed uPVC products, which stay at a warmer temperature, thereby reducing the likelihood of condensation.
Know when a job is too large to tackle on your own
If you have heavy-duty bifold or folding sliding doors that seem too big of a job for you alone, know when to call in the window cleaner! Professionals have specialist equipment, such as water-fed poles, which may be more appropriate for your cleaning job. Leaving you to pop the kettle on and put your feet up!
