Choose the right conservatory style for your home

Choose the right conservatory style for your home

A well-made, high quality conservatory is the crowning glory of any home.  If you are looking to add style and space, it really can be one of the best assets a property can offer. As well as adding value prior to a sale, a good conservatory can be a multi-purpose room, lending itself to be a family dining space, an airy playroom or even a home office.

However, conservatories come in many shapes and sizes, and we need to use them all year round to maximise investment. If you’re in the market for a new conservatory, you also need to think about keeping the heat in to avoid draining the rest of the house and pushing your bills higher.

Choosing the right conservatory

Your conservatory needs to be the right style for you and your home and also needs to have the right attributes to enable it to retain heat on colder days.  Remember: if the conservatory is built up to an external door, you will automatically be adding a heat-retaining barrier to your property, so it’s not all bad news. Still, careful planning is needed.

All buildings come with energy efficiency characteristics, and we recommend conservatories from a range of different styles, depending on what the customer’s looking for:

  • Victorian – a classically elegant style with elegant curves and arches and a shaped front.  The double glazed panels ensure heat retention in the winter months and cool comfort in the summer.
  • Edwardian – although this design focuses on light retention and space, this does not detract from its energy saving properties. Even the pitched roof is insulated to keep the warmth in the right place, so you can enjoy snowy landscapes from the comfort of your own back door.
  • Lean-to – this is a simple style that is great for bungalows and small patios, since it leans against one wall. If you have a smaller garden, a lean-to can make the most of limited space without taking up too much of your grassed area. Lean-tos used to have a bad reputation, but today’s modern glazed alternatives ensure insulation will also be a key part of the design.
  • Combination – if you would like a mix of styles, giving you a bespoke conservatory with heat conserving qualities, we can come up with something that is uniquely yours.

Adaptations

No matter the use of your conservatory, you can add things to the design that will help you to retain heat, above and beyond the standard features.

If you want a little privacy, you can add blinds and interior ceiling coverings which will do two things. One, they will hold in the heat on colder days (not just heat generated by the sun, but also any heat that you may be adding within the conservatory from radiators or free standing heaters). Two, in the summer months, they will enable you to reduce a little bit of the heat by blocking the sun’s rays. This avoids the stuffy feeling that some older conservatories suffer with.
