The days are getting longer. The garden is starting to come to life. Spring is here, and it’s easy to see why this season is a favourite for so many people. However, in our British climate, spring can be an unpredictable time of year and, sometimes, the best way to enjoy the changing shapes and colours in the garden, and those lighter evenings, is from the comfort of a warm, dry and mud-free conservatory!
These three steps will help ensure your conservatory is fit for the season ahead, allowing you to really make the most of it this spring.
Give your conservatory a spring clean
If your conservatory was a little neglected over the autumn and winter, it might be in need of some TLC to get it ready for spring. A thorough spring clean is the quickest and easiest way to breathe new life into your conservatory. This includes washing the outer and inner windows to help maximise light flow, and carefully wiping down the frames to prevent mildew. You should also make sure the guttering is thoroughly cleared of leaves and other debris.
To make the inside as attractive as possible, everything should be cleaned, polished or washed, including the floor and any furniture covers. You might also like to play around with the arrangement of the furniture to add extra interest – a favourite old chair in a new spot can feel like a whole new piece of furniture.
Think about your glazing
A well-made conservatory can be a real asset to your home, and it is certainly a savvy investment. However, as with any investment, it needs to be right if you are to get the maximum return. If the glazing in a conservatory is inefficient or poorly fitted, it can lead to enormous heat loss in the autumn and winter, and overheating in the warmer months. If you have experienced such problems with your conservatory, now is an ideal time to think about replacing the glazing with high-quality, energy-efficient glazing. You could also consider replacing the roof with a solid or half-solid, half-glazed roof, which is a fantastic way to prevent heat loss and overheating.
Invest in quality blinds
Spring can deliver some beautiful hot, sunny days one week and very cold, damp days the next. Installing blinds or curtains – either on the windows, the roof or both – is a very effective way to help control the temperature in your conservatory. Good quality blinds will help you keep the heat in on those colder days, and keep the temperature down when things start to warm up.
