It’s sensible to replace your double glazing after a harsh winter, and new windows will prepare you for a year of energy saving and efficiency. Modern windows keep the cold winter winds at bay, reduce heating costs and stop condensation becoming a more serious problem. For those living on a busy road, new double or triple glazing will keep the traffic noise to an absolute minimum, and the new technologies of production will mean you can have windows installed quickly and professionally.
It’s important to prepare your home for the delivery and installation of the new windows so the job goes smoothly, from the moment the team arrives to the minute you wave them goodbye.
Your Double Glazing Team
All builders and contractors expect to work to a schedule. Whether you are having just new windows put in place, or buying windows as part of a bigger project, the installers will expect to start and finish on time.
Those arriving on site will have detailed plans of the windows to be installed and where they are to be fitted. You can play your part by having your property ready.
The most important thing you need to do in advance is to ensure that all access points are clear. This includes inside and outside access, since installers will need to safely move windows from their vehicles to the locations they will be fitted at. Double or triple glazing is extremely heavy, so allow some room for manoeuvre:
- If you have a driveway, move cars onto the street so the van can get up close
- If you have on-street parking, use cones, or ask the neighbours to park round the corner for a day
- Clear away any plant pots, window boxes or garden furniture which is under or near the windows
- Clear pathways of toys, furniture and bins
- If it’s wet, sweep away excess leaves so there’s less risk of a slip or trip taking place
Inside the home, remove everything from the windowsills and worktops. Take down nets, curtains, poles and rails, and bag up your curtains so they don’t get dusty.
Ensure the floor is clear, too. You might want to cover the carpets, including the walkway from the front door, and push furniture out of the way. Don’t worry: the team will be happy to help with big items, but won’t want to be faced with extended delays.
Finally, the important bit: refreshment. Installing windows is thirsty work, so have a full kettle available at all times for tea and coffee. It will be much appreciated, whatever time of year you have the job done.
