Do you want timber or uPVC windows for your home?

There was a time when ‘plastic’ windows were seen as a poor quality product. This was due to poor quality imports and old-fashioned, badly installed glazing. Over time, this kind of uPVC could yellow, warp or split in the sun, or pick up thick black mould due to condensation.

Nowadays, most homeowners know how to recognise a reliable double glazing company like Hamiltons from a cowboy looking to make a quick buck. uPVC is a respected choice for windows, and has drawn level with timber in popularity.

Still, there may be good reason for some customers to chose timber window frames, rather than reliable, maintenance-free plastic. What’s the best option for you?

Key Differences of uPVC and Timber Windows

Timber and uPVC windows can both be coloured in beautiful wood tones (or a fairly accurate replica of the real thing). Both are secure, hard wearing and beautiful. But there are some notable differences between them:

  • The colour of plastic windows is fixed. They can’t be painted. Wooden frames can be adapted if you fancy a new look
  • uPVC is easy and fast to install
  • Timber is stronger than plastic, so it’s often used for very large windows
  • White uPVC frames cost about half as much as timber windows of the same dimensions. Coloured uPVC costs more, but is still cheaper than wood
  • Timber frames tend to be more acceptable in listed buildings, although this isn’t a hard and fast rule. Sometimes style is more important
  • uPVC windows have a long lifespan, but timber windows do last longer if cared for. Timber windows do have to be maintained properly to reach their maximum lifespan. Many are not, and have to be removed and replaced before their time

Similarities

Both timber and uPVC windows are easy to maintain, and good quality parts won’t deteriorate. Timber needs to be freshened up from time to time; uPVC just needs a quick wash. If you’re not a DIY person, stick with trusty plastic, but don’t be put off if you really want real wood.

Guiding Your Decision

Remember: whatever you decide, your windows will offer superb energy efficiency, security and longevity. They will easily outperform your old single glazing, and you’ll notice a real difference in comfort and warmth.

For many customers, cost is the deciding factor. Modern uPVC is simply cheaper than timber. For others, it’s a gut feeling – a personal preference for one or the other.
